Mechanism and compounds
The centerpiece is GHK-Cu (Glycyl-L-Histidyl-L-Lysine chelated with Cu²⁺), an endogenous tripeptide described by Pickart that in the literature modulates the expression of more than 4,000 genes linked to type I and III collagen, elastin, decorin and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, activating TGF-β and VEGF cascades; the copper ion acts as a cofactor of lysyl oxidase and superoxide dismutase. The category also includes melanocortin analogs such as Melanotan II (cyclic peptide Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH₂) studied in pigmentation.
