Mechanism and compounds
Heptapeptides of Russian origin such as Semax —an analog of the ACTH (4-10) fragment with a C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension— and Selank —an analog of the immunomodulator Tuftsin with the same stabilizing extension. In preclinical literature Semax is studied for its modulation of BDNF and NGF in the hippocampus and cortex alongside dopaminergic/serotonergic systems, while Selank is studied for its action on GABA-A receptor subunits and serotonin in limbic structures.
